Air Pollution Mapping, China

As China rapidly becomes a significant force in the world economy, there is one very immediate challenge facing the country's administration - an increasing legacy of environmental pollution. Not least is China's dire air quality. As recent reports indicate, the country is literally choking on its success as just one percent of China's 560 million city dwellers breathe air considered safe by the European Union1.

In 2007, ADMCF jointly with WWF Hong Kong, provided funding support for China's Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs - a Beijing based non-government think tank, to develop China's first "Air Pollution Map"

Led by one of China's most recognized environmental protection advocates - Ma Jun, the map has been developed in the form of a public interest database designed to make information about air quality in the nation's 31 provinces and over 300 cities, including Hong Kong, accessible to the public.

Status

The website was launched in November 2007 at a press conference held in Hong Kong.

The press release and articles related to the event can be viewed here.

To date (April 2008), the database has covered 238 cities across 22 provinces, has identified: 6696 companies non-compliant with Chinese air pollution regulations, 227 of these companies are located on IPE’s air pollution maps.
