Environment Conservation & Protection
Mission
We are committed to the conservation of marine and terrestrial biodiversity, the mitigation of climate change and to combating environmental degradation in the region. We aim to work with a diversity of partners to have a significant and sustainable impact.
Working to Conserve and Protect our Environment
The environmental challenges we face in Asia are both significant and immediate. By region they are extremely diverse and, as a consequence, needs vary greatly. In developed economies such as Hong Kong, there is a relatively strong regulatory framework for the governance of a broad range of environmental issues, in addition to which environmental groups are relatively well structured with the ability to target environmental initiatives effectively. Consequently, our approach in Hong Kong is to support work relating to:
- policy change and advocacy where current policy is considered inadequate and
- policy development where policy and regulation is needed but has yet to be defined.
Where economies are developing such as in Cambodia, Vietnam, India, China, there frequently is inadequate environmental regulation and/or enforcement as well as limited local capacity with respect to environmental governance. In addition, local environmental groups often lack resources to tackle successfully the wide range of environmental issues facing them. As a result, we aim to support long-term development through both institutional capacity building and the provision of skills training.
Throughout the region, we seek innovative models and approaches to funding environmental conservation, as opposed to simple grant-giving. We strongly believe that replicable and sustainable models of funding are the only real answer to long-term conservation.
MEASURING SUCCESS
Metrics to indicate performance and ultimately success are developed on a project-by-project basis. Inevitably, as with our Children and Youth at Risk programmes, our selection criteria for investing in local partners must include the ability of these organizations to measure their impact effectively.Projects
