Leveraging Finance

Environmental resilience and the vision of a net zero world cannot be achieved without financing. Pledges have been repeatedly made to provision initiatives dedicated to protecting our natural resources, avoiding environmental degradation, adapting to a changing climate as well as transitioning to net zero.

Economic systems incentivise short-termism over long-term sustainability. Investors and businesses often underestimate the financial risks of climate change and biodiversity loss as well as the opportunities in nature-based solutions. A lack of robust metrics to measure and value natural capital hinders informed investment decisions. Worse still, capital is routinely misallocated to industries that accelerate climate change, applied towards unsustainable uses of resources that exacerbate biodiversity loss or channelled into maladaptation actions.

We must fill the finance gap to accelerate adaptation and transition and build environmental resilience.

Objective

The Leveraging Finance Programme aims to drive business and finance toward more responsible use of our resources as well as unpack climate and biodiversity impacts to redirect capital, as well as facilitate new financing solutions to build resilience for a net zero world. This work is primarily conducted under two main themes Climate + Water and Nature.
