Protecting Wildlife & Landscapes

Wildlife–flora, fauna and fungi and their associated ecosystems are the building blocks of biodiversity and nature.

The health and resilience of these ecosystems, their capacity to sequester carbon and their ability to deliver the wide range of nature-based services essential for human survival all hinge on biodiversity.

Home to nearly a half of our planet’s biodiversity hotspots and nearly a fifth of its forest cover, the Asia Pacific region is central to climate mitigation and addressing species decline. Protecting wildlife, strengthening biodiversity and promoting sustainable practices are vital to safeguarding nature and human well-being.

Objective

The Protecting Wildlife & Landscapes Programme aims to reduce the stressors on our natural ecosystems, identifying threats to the survival of plant, animal and fungi species and to define and act on key intervention points. We aim to achieve this by informing and engaging stakeholders, building capacity, raising awareness and mobilising resources locally, regionally and internationally.

Currently, we focus on a major driver of global biodiversity loss—the international wildlife trade, while also advancing biodiversity research, policy development and education in Asia.
