UNOC Side Event: Addressing Marine Wildlife Trafficking to Protect Our Oceans
As part of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, we are organising a side-event on “Addressing Marine Wildlife Trafficking to Protect Our Oceans” through our International Champion, the International Council of Environmental Law, with the support of the Born Free Foundation, The Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime and Freeland Foundation.
The event will be held on 5 June, which is World Environment Day and the 5th anniversary of the Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm CET.
With this side-event, we aim to bring the issue of marine wildlife trafficking to the UN oceans fora – where this topic is often overlooked. It will also delve into the gaps in the international legal framework that facilitate marine species trafficking, and the potential for an additional Protocol to the UNTOC covering wildlife trafficking (which includes marine species and illegal fishing) to address marine wildlife crime.
Our expert panel will feature:
- John Scanlon, ICEL Executive President and Chair of the Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime
- Daniel Kachelriess, Marine Law and Policy Expert
- Yvonne Sadovy, Honorary Professor – University of Hong Kong
- Stan Shea, Marine Programme Director – Bloom
- Russell Gray, Head of Data – Global Initiative to End Transnational Organized Crime
- Dr. Vanessa Pirotta, Rapiscan/Honorary Scientific Associate – Taronga Conservation Society Australia
